Mandela Day 2022

One third of all food produced in South Africa is dumped in landfill, while more than 14 million people go hungry every day.

Established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, FoodForward SA connects a world of excess to a world of need by recovering quality edible surplus food from the consumer goods supply chain and distributing it to community organisations that collectively serve  700,000 people per day. More than 80% of the food recovered is nutritious food.

FoodForward SA is the largest food redistribution organisation in South Africa.

The FoodForward SA Mandela Day Food Drive in partnership with Pick n Pay provides much-needed basic food groceries to vulnerable communities. Every year they aim to collect hundreds of tons of food, donated by Pick n Pay shoppers during the annual food drive. This initiative helps stock FoodForward SA’s warehouses across the country with essential products for the winter months ahead; ensuring that the nearly 2,500 registered Beneficiary Organisations that they serve each month will continue to provide warm meals to the 875,000 vulnerable people they feed every day.

A very big thank you to everyone at Retecon that volunteered their time today and spent 67 minutes packing food at Gallagher Convention Centre for Mandela Day. #FoodForwardSA #mandeladay2022
